I noticed we have had quite a few new members register in recent weeks. I thought it might be a good time to "awaken" the introductions topic for those who might like to introduce themselves and tell us a little bit about your work in NGO governance.

Hello and welcome, Angie! Thank you for introducing yourself and your company, as well as expressing your interest in participating in learning and exchange on this site. As you have probably already seen, the easiest way to ask or answer a question is in the Ask the Community area. Also, as a good way to learn what is on the site and get tips on how to make the most of it, you may want to join a new member orientations held on November 27 at 3pm GMT (Skype call). Warm greetings,

I'm pleased to join this community. I work with private, independent, K-12 international schools in the Middle East and South Asia. My interest is in finding ways to help the trustees of these schools to operate more effectively and to ameliorate the negative effects of frequent board turnover. (Last year I edited an international edition of "The Trustee Handbook" of the National Association of Independent Schools" and would welcome any comments and/or suggestions.)

Good day. I have been a governance development practitioner since 1995 when i attended the inaugural Carver Policy Governance Academy. I work primarily with cultural organizations such as nfp theatres, symphonies, art galleries, etc. I also work with public sector organizations. Our company focuses on assisting organizations shape their identity which for us begins with leadership at the board and staff levels and ends with a clear understanding of the impact the whole organization can best make on the community it serves.
i am looking forward to expanding my learning of the governance process and contributing to the discussion when appropriate

Welcome, Hong! Good to have you on board! I am interested to hear from which organization you are coming from in Viet Nam. Are there any specific governance issues you are dealing with on a daily basis that you would like to share with us? You can share your views here in the Ask the Community area, just pick some of the already existing topics, or create your new one! Also, same as all of the other new members to the site, you can join one of our regular new member orientation Skype calls. You can find out about them here . They are a great way to learn what is here and tips on how to make the most of the site. Warm regards, Djurdjica Ivkovic

Welcome, Gustavo! Thanks for taking a moment to introduce yourself. You may wish to join one of our regular new member orientation Skype calls. You can find out about them here . They are a great way to learn what is here and tips on how to make the most of the site.
Another great way to "jump in" is to ask or answer a question, here in the Ask the Community area. The one thing I've already discovered from our early members is that each is a wealth of information. So don't be shy, get into the conversation!

Dear Kathy, i am sorry my response is rather coming weeks after. This is due to part of the teething problem i am going through right now. Basically, i wanted to compare ideas and experience of others like you guys with what i already have as regards setting up an NGO. I actually have some structure in place, but then one can never be too loaded of ideas. Thanks. Bunmi

Dear Bunmi,I am so glad you are enjoying this site, and finding it useful! I am not quite sure if you are asking how to form a board for an organization that you are a part of (or would like to create), or if you are asking simply how to become more involved in the NGO sector in general. Could you clarify this? Thanks!Kathy Hedge

Bunmi, can you tell us more about Voice Over for Greater Empowerment? Is there a web page where we might learn more?

Hi Kathy, i must confess that, i have been enjoying the contributions i have read so far in the last few days of my membership here. As someone new and fresh from the youth service corps in Nigeria, i am really curious to learn about NGO governance to help me continue what i have started in the few months as my community development initiative while serving. I think my situation is quite different from others. I have done quite a few projects as a youth corps member on which i want to consolidate, now under the name Voice Over for Greater Empowerment Please help, how do i take off? Bunmi Wuraola

Hi Demola, In answer to your question about governance training...the group that Bisi referred to was part of the International Fellowship for Nonprofit Governance program that BoardSource offered from 1999 to 2003. Unfortunately, BoardSource no longer offers that program. We hope, though, that this online forum can help meet some of the interest for dialogue and information around governance issues. And, this site will also advertise any training events on NGO governance that are offered throughout the world by other groups (go to the Resources area of this site and click on "events" to see the events listed, and/or to post an event that you know about). Perhaps at some point in the future we can even offer an online governance training session through this site! Thanks again for your interest and participation!

I will also like to know if the training only hold in the US or there are opportunity in africa, I am from Nigeria. Thanks for great job. Demola Adeoye

If you would like you can start a new discussion thread for the 2001 group. Just click on "Create content" in the right green bar and then choose "ask a question of the community." That will start a new thread here in the overall "Ask the Community" area. If there is a lot of interest, we can set you up with a Working Group as well! THANKS!

Hi Colleagues, Thought this might be a good forum for the 2001 Governance fellow to link-up. If you are reading this mail and you belong to the group that attended the Governance Fellowship Training in Washington DC in 2001, kindly respond to this mail and lets start talking. Looking forward to hearing from you all. Bisi Tugbobo |
